How do smart homes save money on household bills?

Smart home technology can significantly reduce utility bills.

In an average home, heating costs make up half the household bills and lighting makes up another quarter.

There are three excellent bits of technology that noticeably reduce those monthly outgoings: smart thermostats, smart lighting and smart sockets.

Smart thermostats

Heating uses more energy than any other appliance in a UK home so it pays dividends to use a smart thermostat.

These enable you to control the temperature at home from anywhere. No problem if you’ve forgotten to turn the heating down when you left the house. The thermostat can take care of that for you.

Smart thermostats can also learn your preferences and will adjust the temperature accordingly.
Likewise, hot water can be ready when needed.

Through sensors, rooms can have different programmed temperatures, so money is saved by not heating empty rooms.

What’s more, they can even be programmed to automatically respond to changes on weather in your absence.

Smart lights

The beauty of smart lighting is twofold.

Installing LED lights helps reduce energy usage, since they are 80% more energy efficient than traditional bulbs and are rated A+ for energy efficiency.

Smart lighting uses switches and sensors. These enable you to switch lights off from afar when you’re worried that you’ve left them on, saving further energy.

A quarter of electricity bills is spent on lighting so it pays to make the change.

Smart sockets

Many appliances continue to draw power when they’re not in use. Smart TVs, gaming consoles and computers are often the biggest culprits.

In fact standby power is reported to result in up to 16% of electricity bills.

Smart plugs are an easy way of turning household appliances on and off when are you’re away from home.

This dramatically reduces stress levels when you’re wondering if you left the iron on, but it cuts costs too.

Even when you’re at home, smart sockets continue to save energy by automatically switching devices off when they’re not in use – when you go to bed, for example.

To be informed is to be armed. Smart technology monitors energy consumption and in being able to see which devices are power hungry, you are able to act.
